ST. MARTIN’S PARISH COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
St. Martin’s Parish Council met on Monday, March 31, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Meeting Center with St. John’s Parish Council.
Members Present: Father Paul Beach, Pam Foushee (Chairperson), Mike Buckman, Debbie Foushee, and Tom Foushee. Member Absent: Melinda Banks and Nick Powers.Others Present: Barbara Muncy, Secretary and Cathy Wright, Formation Chairperson.Others Absent: Deacon Bob Caspar, Tabitha Folden, Ronnie Foushee, Roselle Muse, Gloria Ritter, Anita Seymour, Elaine Vowels, Deacon John Richard Whelan, and Youth Representative, Whitney Pack.
Opening: Father Paul opened the meeting at 7:10 with a prayer.
Crystal Lebouf from the Red Cross office that works with Meade County, Radcliff and Fort Knox talked about how communities can help in time of disasters, such as the recent tornado. The goals of the Red Cross are to provide shelter, food and clothing. The Red Cross partnerships with local churches because they help people in need. They can provide a facility where the Red Cross can setup aid. The Red Cross provides training to volunteers on how to open a shelter and how to help the local community. At present, there are four schools in Meade County who provide shelters: David T. Wilson, Freshmen Academy, Payneville, and Flaherty. The Red Cross will send volunteers, in addition to the volunteers from the local community. There is a need for nurses. Classes can be given in Meade County. Classes are also available at Fort Knox, Elizabethtown and Louisville. Father Paul feels there is a need to have trained people in our area and wants to provide information to those who may be interested. Additional information will be in the bulletin.
There will be a mission priest filling in for Father Paul the weekend of April 5/6 while he is on retreat. Father Robert Pittman will say the masses and talk about helping Catholic African-Americans.
Father Paul: The date for the next parish council meeting will be Monday, May 5, 2008 at 7:15 p.m. in St. Martin’s Community Center.
- Altar server training - April 14 at 7:15.
- First Communion - April 20 at 9:00 a.m. mass.
- Corpus Christi – May 25 at 2:00 p.m.
- 160th Anniversary of St. Martin’s – September.
- The Archdiocesan shared 50/50 fundraising campaign has been approved by the Archbishop. Father Paul is on the pastoral committee and will be in contact with Nick Eve about a feasibility study in conjunction with the campaign at St. Martin’s.
- Father Paul departed the meeting at 7:25 to join St. John’s meeting.
The minutes from the March 4 meeting and the January financial statement were reviewed. Mike made a motion to accept the minutes as written and Debbie seconded the motion.
Committee Reports:
Formation Committee: Cathy Wright. No report as she has not had a formation meeting.
Social Concerns: Gloria Ritter and Anita Seymour absent. No report.
Youth Report: Whitney Pack absent. No report.
Worship Committee: Roselle Muse absent. No report. Roselle will be resigning at the end of May.
Service Committee: Elaine Vowels absent. No report.
Administration Committee: Ronnie Foushee absent. The council discussed adding another gate to the cemetery. A parish family has requested permission to add the gate at no expense to the parish. The council approved the request, with the stipulation that the wrought iron gate match the existing gates.
Old Business:
- The pancake breakfast was a success. Approximately 80 to 100 people attended. There was confusion about the time for the egg hunt. An effort will be made to set a definite time next year.
- There were about a dozen people who helped cleaned the cafeteria on March 29. Debbie noted that the floor needs to be stripped and waxed.
- There was very good attendance at Doughnut Sunday on March 16. Nick and Julie Powers will host the next Doughnut Sunday which is also First Communion Sunday (April 20). The First Communion reception will be held at this time.
- A date to install skate boarding signs has been delayed due to the weather.
- Debbie is working on the wording for the signs to be placed at the cemetery.
Staff:
DRE: Tabitha Folden absent. The First Communion parent meeting (April 2 or 9) and retreat (April 12) are planned. First Communion is April 20. The final dates for religious education classes are Wednesday, April 30 and Sunday, May 4.
Father Paul rejoined the meeting at 7:45.
- Father Paul has talked with Ronnie concerning prioritizing a budget for funding of projects from the Administration Committee.
- September 14 has been scheduled as the tentative date for the 160th Anniversary celebration and homecoming. Debbie will call Gloria to schedule a meeting on April 21 at 7:15 in St. Martin’s Center for the planning committee to meet. (Note: the date has been changed to April 28).
- Father Paul stated that Tabitha resigned, effective March 28. Father Paul will be looking at needs for a DRE.
New Business: None.
Closing: Tom made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Pam seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Monday, May 5, at 7:15 p.m. in St. Martin’s Community Center. Cathy Wright will prepare the opening and closing prayer for the May meeting.
